Making Bricks, Finding Marshmallows (July 18)

The following post features student writing.

Today our group started off the morning with a good breakfast of scrambled eggs. We then separated into three groups. One group of three girls (Katya, Talia, and Rose) traveled down to Coya then Calca, then Pisac, and finally ended up in Cusco on a trip in search of paint supplies and marshmallows (for s’mores, of course). The other two groups continued to work on bathrooms. One group (Molly, Dhiya, Harper, Lucas, Giacomo, Alex, and Renee) went to Juan’s house and collected dirt, cut hay, and mixed these together with water to create the mixture to create new adobe bricks. The other group (Stella, Ellie, Cara, Camille, Filip, and Shannan) went to Aurilio’s house and lifted adobe bricks to help build the walls for this bathroom.

After working on the bathrooms, the girls (except those in Coya) headed over to the school to find the children practicing marching in preparation for an upcoming parade in the town. Many of the girls marched with the children to help keep time and set examples for the younger children. Meanwhile, the boys worked on interveiwing townspeople (which is the focus of their independent project). We then had a nice lunch and short break before returning to the same groups for an hour more of bathroom work. After more bathroom work, people either relaxed, walked around the village, or worked further on their independent projects. We then had dinner, which included yucca, rice, veggies, and chicken, and after dinner we all relaxed and got ready for bed. In the late evening the three girls and Matt finally arrived home from Cusco and after their arrival we all went to bed after a sucsessful day of work and fun.

Stay tuned for more!
